Terrence Malick creates and makes statements in his films. Often, the films are long, always beautifully shot, and require the audience to think about the point he's making.
In this movie, the focus is on living and acting on your beliefs. Franz Jagerstatter (August Diehl) was profoundly religious and had a personal relationship with his idea of God, Christ, and what was right and wrong. He was faithful to the Catholic church in his tiny Austrian hillside village, called St. Radegund. As part of his commitment to the church performed duties at the church almost every day.
Married to Franziska, Fani (Valerie Pachner) they began their life together, farming and then having two children. They farmed their land by hand and were an integral part of their small community. During harvest season, the community worked together to bring in and store the harvested crops. The town felt like it was a long way from the war that Hitler was bringing to the world. However, when the war started turning against Hitler, the army drafted all eligible men to serve the Third Reich. This included Franz.
A requirement for serving the German Army was to sign a pledge of allegiance to Hitler and the German government. Franz couldn't do this. He could not live with himself if he signed something that was against what he believed, and after the army attempted to persuade him with physical and verbal abuse, they threw him in jail. The German officers even solicited the assistance of his local priest to convince him to sign the oath of loyalty. In essence, the priest was saying that God would overlook his signing the document to save his own life and the life of his family.
He couldn't and wouldn't sign the oath and therefore spent years in jail. But Franz wasn't the only one who paid the price, so did Fani. In scenes back in the village, Fani and the girls are depicted being shunned by almost everyone in the village because her husband Franz was giving their town a bad name in the eyes of ruling Germany.
The film spends time going back and forth between Franz in prison being harassed and beaten into signing a loyalty oath and the village where Fani and the girls were continuing to be harassed by the people in her town.
The immense pressure building up in Franz didn't break him down and his wife, despite the immense movement to ostracize her and the girls, continued to support him and his decision despite what she was going through.
This film shows the cruelty of people when someone stands up for their beliefs. Because the people, including the priest, are unwilling to stand for their true feelings, they make Franz and Fani the enemy.
The physical beauty of the area of the village was well captured by the cinematographer. The integration of archival footage of Adolf Hitler and the huge parades he commanded was well done.
Diehl was terrific as Franz. His ability to show his internal struggle in a contained, in prison, way was perfect. Pacher was sublime. Her looks of intensity and passion towards other characters, amazing. Michael Nyqvist's performance as the local Bishop that tried to persuade Franz to sign the document was excellent. Alexander Radszun's performance as the judge that sentenced Franz to death was very good. You could see that he understood and struggled but had to follow his own loyalty oath. Malick wrote a script that was too long. I think the film could have had a stronger impact if it was more crisp in its presentation.
Overall: Long and pretty, it needed to be tightened up to make its point even stronger.

Most of the famous religious-themed Hollywood movies – from “The Ten Commandments” to “The Greatest Story Ever Told” – are biblical epics functioning as star-studded illustrated guidebooks to sacred texts. Writer-director Terrence Malick’s “A Hidden Life” is the antithesis of those epics. It’s an attempt to make the movie itself function as a religious experience. It’s about Franz Jägerstätter (August Diehl), a peasant farmer and devout Roman Catholic in the Alpine-ringed Austrian village of St. Radegund who refuses to swear an oath of loyalty to Adolf Hitler and ultimately is executed. (He was beatified by the Vatican in 2007. ) His wife, Fani (Valerie Pachner), is torn by his stance but stands by him. Their three little daughters are kept in the dark. The villagers, branding him a traitor, turn against the family. Malick does not dismiss lightly the philosophical arguments encouraging Franz to relent and sign the oath. (Says one sympathizer: “God doesn’t care what you say, only what is in your heart. ”) Ultimately it is Fani’s father who speaks for the filmmaker: “Better to suffer injustice than to do it. ” Despite its faults – a glacial three-hour running time and Malick’s overuse of oracular voice-overs to express his characters’ inner thoughts – the film does indeed succeed in being a species of religious experience. It has a powerful sense of the immanence of life. Franz’s stance is a deeply moral one, but his morality is based on his religious precepts. This is what differentiates “A Hidden Life” from so many Hollywood movies where people, without any religious underpinning, fight for what is right. For reasons I suspect are more commercial than doctrinal, Hollywood has never been conducive to explicitly religious movies. Malick, who is currently shooting a movie about Jesus, is so far out of the studio mainstream that he essentially operates on his own recognizance. There have been few other recent Hollywood movies attempting anything similar to “A Hidden Life. ” Paul Schrader’s “First Reformed” starred Ethan Hawke as a parish pastor beset by personal demons; its tortuous examination of the sacred and the profane leaned a bit too heavily on the profane. “Silence, ” set in the 17th century and directed by Martin Scorsese, was about two Portuguese Jesuit priests who venture into Japan, where Christianity was forbidden, in search of the mentor who has reportedly renounced his faith. A long-held passion project, it was a movie that ultimately seemed to mean more to its director than to its audience. Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge, ” about a Seventh-day Adventist who becomes a World War II hero despite being a pacifist battlefield medic, exhibited Gibson’s usual penchant for bloodlust posing as religiosity. The enjoyable “The Two Popes” is less a religious movie than a high-toned buddy picture: Cardinal Bergoglio and Pope Benedict bond over ABBA and soccer games. It’s not surprising that the most powerful religious-themed movies have come from outside Hollywood. Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer’s “The Passion of Joan of Arc” (1928), a total submersion into the ecstasies and agonies of faith, is the greatest of them all. More recently is Xavier Beauvois’ “Of Gods and Men” (2010), about Trappist monks in largely Muslim Algeria whose moral imperative to preserve their beliefs means almost certain death at the hands of terrorists. “A Hidden Life” doesn’t rise to the level of these movies, but it shares with them a reverence for the sanctity of Scripture, which, in the film’s terms, is synonymous with the sanctity of life. It does justice to the George Eliot quote from “Middlemarch” in the end credits: “For the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs. ”.

I would 10/10 recommend this movie, it follows the book so well, and it adds their future lives as well. A hidden life showtimes los angeles. A Hidden lifestyle. A hidden life showtimes near me. A Hidden life music. A hidden life wikipedia. I love Terrence Malick. He's truly phenomenal and wonderful and unique. He's a magical filmmaker and created some of my absolute favorite movies. Badlands, Tree of Life, and even Knight of Cups and Song to Song are all totally perfect to me. I don't dislike any of the other ones, but they didn't resonate with me the same way. Days of Heaven is pretty, but the voice over felt kind of unnecessary and off. Thin Red Line is very good too, but a bit overly long and in need of shortening. I haven't seen the New World, but Tree of Life is absolutely perfect and I could literally watch it an infinite number of times and never get bored. Same with Badlands, probably the best romance movie ever in my opinion. But after Tree of Life, generally considered his master work, is where things get iffy. His movies start to get more similar, which they weren't before. One theory is they become more personal. Tree of Life was about the death of Malick's brother, for example. To the Wonder is next and is probably about Malick's first marriage ending. Also, it's quite good, but never reaches the same level as his previous works. I enjoy it a lot but I feel Affleck may have been miscast. Maybe that was the point though. Still, beautiful film and very memorable. Knight of Cups is phenomenal. Really, no flaws at all here. This one also seems to be about Malick's brother's death but also his father. I really, really like this one. It's one of his best. The backlash it got simply made no sense to me. It's when I started to stop trust critics entirely. Song to Song is also truly amazing. Beautiful, heartbreaking, sweet, and mesmerizing. The symbolism is amazing, the dialogue is very good, and it just feels like an extension of Knight of Cups but in the best possible way. The two films fit so well together. The final shot of Song to Song is possibly the greatest image Malick has ever produced. It's an amazing movie on so many levels. But then I saw A Hidden Life. And really, I didn't hate it. It's still beautiful, it's still unique, and the acting is very very good. But it's far too long and says far too little. There's no development, no change within the characters, just self indulgent meandering is misery. Over and over again, we see the same images, same places, it's like a slide show. He doesn't tend to do that, his movies are vast but somehow efficient. Usually. Not this time. The final shot is the true disappointment. Usually his final shots are perfect, something meaningful and symbolic to resonate with the viewer. This is literally just a shot of a mountain that could have literally been at any other point in the film. It's awful. Maybe if it wasn't such a dour film it might work? I didn't think Thin Red Line fit his style either. I just don't think it was a good story for him to adapt I guess.

Who else watched the video only cause they saw Emilia Clarke in the thumbnail. Just a warning for those of you expecting a more "palatable" Malick film compared to his recent releases... this is not that. You have a little more story than his previous recent releases but it by no means traverses away from well-known niche of long, quiet spells with heavily edited sweeping shots and the ability to fit a 30 minute story into 3 hours. So, if you're expecting to finally give Malick another try because you were bored with his recent releases, this is not it. I know first screenings' reviews made it appear that this is a more palatable film but it really isn't. It's typical Malick; a meditation of sorts. I personally loved it and found it beautiful, but I also appreciate these kind of movies. I only write this review because I brought a friend with me who's not the biggest Malick film; he enjoys a different style of cinema, nothing against that. But he was in the belief this was a more digestible film with an exciting story arc, conclusion, message, etc... it's not. This is the perfect movie to ingest a muscle relaxer, a couple of glasses of red, and just consume what's presented in front of you.
